Shipping from China to Canada: Ocean or Air Freight?
Bring your next supplier order from China to Canada with WTM Logistics. Choose ocean freight for planned replenishment or request air freight when stock availability, a launch or a repair deadline makes time the priority. Send your supplier location, packed load and Canadian destination for a shipment-specific quote.

Choose around the order your business needs
Start with the date the goods must be usable at your Canadian location—not simply the date a vessel or flight is expected to arrive. An import still needs its arrival handling, release and final delivery organised. A lower international freight rate can be poor value if it misses a receiving appointment or leaves a critical product unavailable.
Ocean shipping can suit planned inventory, equipment and larger replenishment orders when the schedule allows. Air shipping is worth comparing for urgent parts, samples, launch stock and smaller high-value orders. Neither choice can be settled by the product name alone: packed size, gross weight, handling and the complete delivery deadline matter.
Ocean freight: compare LCL with FCL
LCL shares container capacity with other shipments. FCL books a container for the shipment, even if every cubic metre is not used. Ask WTM to compare the complete options for your cargo rather than relying on a universal volume cutoff.
Describe cartons, pallets or crates as they will actually leave the supplier. Tall non-stackable pieces, heavy equipment and fragile finishes may change the handling plan. Give the loading location and whether the supplier can prepare the goods for the proposed collection.
Air freight: buy useful time
Tell us what happens if the shipment arrives late. A sample needed before a buyer meeting is a different request from routine replacement stock. Ask for a complete ready-to-delivery estimate, including the origin collection and Canadian handoff, rather than comparing only flight duration.
Provide gross weight and the outside dimensions of every package. Lightweight bulky cargo can produce a higher chargeable weight than its scale weight suggests. Declare batteries, liquids and other special contents at enquiry so the suitable service can be assessed.
Split the order when the deadlines differ
Planning example: a Canadian retailer has 100 cartons ready in China but needs only 10 cartons for its launch. Compare sending those 10 by air and the balance by ocean with sending everything on one mode. Keep separate packing lists and clear supplier release instructions. This is a planning option, not a promise that splitting every order saves money.
Compare quotes from supplier to receiver
- Exact collection location in China and Canadian destination postal code.
- Commodity, package count, packed dimensions and gross weight.
- Ready date and latest useful arrival.
- Agreed seller-buyer shipping terms and the services included at each end.
- Customs responsibilities, destination handling and any separately payable charges.
- Dock, forklift, tailgate, appointment or inside-delivery requirements.
Confirm who is responsible for the import arrangements before dispatch. CBSA guidance explains commercial importing and registration requirements. Freight transportation and customs accounting are different functions; the shipment plan should identify both without leaving a gap.
Keep the Canadian delivery in the original plan
A warehouse in Mississauga, a shop in Toronto and a business in Edmonton need different final handoffs. Specify the receiving entrance, hours and unloading equipment. WTM’s Canadian freight brokerage and LTL freight services can be discussed as part of the onward delivery request.
China-to-Canada shipping questions
Is air always the right choice for a small order?
No. Compare the deadline, packed volume and complete quote. A small order with a flexible schedule may still merit an ocean option.
Does door-to-door mean duties and unloading are included?
Ask for the inclusions in writing. The delivery address alone does not establish tax treatment, unloading equipment or inside placement.
Can I request recurring shipments?
Yes. Share normal supplier release dates, order sizes and replenishment targets so WTM can quote a repeat plan and urgent exceptions separately.
