China to Canada Ocean Freight: LCL or FCL for Your Order?
Ship your next commercial order from China by ocean with a plan that covers more than the container journey. WTM Logistics can quote LCL or FCL using your supplier location, actual packed cargo and Canadian receiving requirements.

LCL and FCL answer different capacity needs
LCL means less than container load: your goods use shared container capacity. FCL means full container load: the container is booked for your shipment. A container does not have to be completely full for an FCL comparison to be worthwhile. Compare the actual quotes, handling and delivery plan.
For LCL, confirm the proposed consolidation and destination collection arrangements. For FCL, establish where the container will be loaded, unloaded and returned, and who provides the equipment and labour. A freight rate is only useful when these handoffs are understood.
Give WTM the finished shipping dimensions
Ask the supplier for the packed carton, pallet or crate schedule. Include packaging, pallet bases, projecting components and gross weights. Identify non-stackable cargo and any unit requiring special lifting. Product dimensions from an online catalogue are not a substitute for shipping measurements.
If the supplier proposes loose cartons, describe the count and handling method. Floor-loaded cartons and palletised stock create different unloading jobs in Canada. Confirm whether the receiver will unload a container directly or needs the goods made ready for a subsequent delivery.
Think beyond the headline ocean rate
- Collection and origin handling included in the offer.
- Quoted ocean service, routing and relevant cutoffs.
- Destination handling and release arrangements.
- Customs responsibilities and separately payable duties or taxes.
- Storage, waiting or container-related charges and their applicable terms.
- Final Canadian delivery and unloading arrangements.
Ask when any included free time starts and which deadlines apply. Do not assume a warehouse receiving date can be changed without consequences after cargo arrives. Request a written breakdown for the actual service rather than comparing two incomplete totals.
Plan for the receiver before the supplier loads
A Canadian distribution centre may accept a container at a booked dock. A small shop may need a separate pallet delivery with suitable unloading equipment. Explain that difference before accepting the shipping plan. Tailgate service does not automatically include unpacking, carrying goods upstairs or placing stock inside.
Planning example: an importer has eight pallets of cartons and one long crate ready in Ningbo. The crate’s footprint and stackability may affect the comparison. Give WTM the complete unit schedule and receiving setup rather than asking for a price for “nine pallets.” Origin and routing are confirmed for the quotation.
Build repeat orders around stock requirements
Share supplier production completion dates and your expected replenishment rhythm. Keep unfinished production separate from freight transit. Agree how late cartons, partial releases and changes to the packing list will be handled before the collection date.
For Canadian distribution after arrival, review WTM LTL freight and freight brokerage. Send the destination postal codes if one import order will serve several receivers.
Ocean shipping questions
Is there one volume where FCL becomes cheaper?
No universal threshold determines the best choice. Price, cargo shape, handling and destination work can change the comparison.
Can I book while production is unfinished?
Request planning with an identified estimated ready date, then confirm the final packing list and release before collection.
Is a port arrival the delivery date?
No. Ask for the stages through to the Canadian receiver, including availability, release and final delivery.
