A postcode is a starting point, not a loading plan
A pallet at a commercial warehouse, a crate inside a small workshop and a skid in a residential garage present different collection conditions. Give the exact pickup address and describe where the goods will be waiting. Include restricted driveways, overhead clearance, loading zones and any requirement to book an arrival time.
Do not move heavy goods onto a pavement or road simply to make them easier to find. Agree a safe collection point with the carrier and keep access available for the equipment assigned.
Follow the load from its resting place to the vehicle
There are three interfaces to consider: moving the packed goods to the collection point, raising them to vehicle height, and placing them safely inside. A forklift may cover more than one step at a warehouse. A tailgate handles a particular lifting step; it does not automatically solve stairs, deep gravel or a narrow doorway.
| Pickup situation | Detail to disclose | What the quote should resolve |
|---|
| Pallet beside a loading dock | Dock height and access | Vehicle compatibility and collection window |
| Skid in a level paved yard | Weight, footprint and available handling equipment | Ground-level pickup method |
| Crate inside a workshop | Doorway, threshold and distance to vehicle | Who moves it to the agreed handoff point |
| Freight at a residential address | Parking, access and load position | Suitable vehicle and agreed collection scope |
Ask for the right truck, not simply the nearest truck
A smaller vehicle might reach an address that a long trailer cannot. It still needs adequate payload, internal dimensions and loading equipment for the shipment. State the fully packed measurements, including the pallet or crate, rather than only the product’s catalogue dimensions.
WTM’s 5-ton straight trucks and broader freight options support different load profiles. Equipment is assigned to the actual request. A vehicle being nearby is not sufficient evidence that it can carry or safely collect your load.
Keep the delivery end in the same enquiry
Pickup suitability is only half of a freight quote. The destination may have very different unloading conditions. A dock-to-house delivery should not be priced as dock-to-dock just because the sender operates a warehouse.
For example, a business buying a machine from a workshop can provide photographs of the packed crate and its access point, then separately describe the buyer’s unloading arrangement. Photographs help explain the setup; measurements and weight still need to be stated.
Turn a local search into a bookable request
Send WTM the origin, destination, ready date, arrival deadline, packed dimensions, weight and access at both ends. Ask whether LTL freight is suitable or whether the deadline requires dedicated transport. Include any handling work beyond collection at the agreed point.
Does freight pickup require a business address?
Not automatically. WTM reviews suitable residential and other collection arrangements using the load and access details. A residential address is a handling condition to disclose, not a substitute for a freight description.
Will the driver carry a pallet out of my building?
Do not assume that. Specify the position of the load and the assistance required before accepting a quote.
Tell WTM where the freight is sitting now and where it needs to finish. We will work from the complete collection and delivery task.
