WTM Logistics · Shipping questions answered

You can begin a shipping enquiry before every measurement is final, but identify estimates as estimates. WTM needs the finished packed dimensions and gross weight to confirm the appropriate service and price basis. A provisional number can help a buying decision; it should not be silently treated as a verified specification when collection is booked.

Find the best available source for each input

Ask the supplier whether it has a packed shipping weight rather than only a product weight. A product page may omit the box, pallet, protective frame or accessories. For a used item, ask whether someone can measure and weigh the prepared consignment using suitable equipment.

Do not attempt an unsafe lift to obtain a number. For a heavy item, arrange an appropriate weighing method or disclose that its weight remains unverified. Photographs may help show the load but cannot establish its weight accurately.

Separate facts from working assumptions

A helpful provisional enquiry might say: “The manufacturer lists the bare machine at 90 kilograms. The seller will add a pallet and crate; final packed weight and dimensions are not yet available. Can you provide a provisional transport estimate and identify what must be confirmed?”

That wording gives the carrier useful context without claiming the load weighs 90 kilograms as shipped. The resulting estimate should preserve the assumptions used.

Ask what could change the estimate

Request the factors that would require a revised quote: additional pieces, larger packaging, non-stackability, a different address or extra handling. This is especially important when you are deciding whether to buy something before it is packed.

Do not compare an estimate based on an uncrated product with a firm offer based on a finished crate. The lower figure may simply describe less freight or less work.

Freeze the specification before booking

Once the goods are prepared, send the final details and obtain confirmation that the selected service still fits. Check the ready date and receiving plan too. Packaging changes can affect loading equipment as well as price.

WTM’s gross, net and tare guide explains which weight includes packaging. The estimate, quote and booking guide covers the difference between those stages. This article helps a first-time sender move from uncertainty to a usable request.

Keep the approved version easy to identify

Use one updated description in the final booking rather than several contradictory measurements scattered across messages. Reference the accepted quote when releasing the shipment. If the supplier adds accessories after approval, update WTM before collection.

Can a picture replace dimensions?

No. A picture can clarify shape and access, but the carrier still needs the measurements and weight required for its service assessment.

Should I deliberately round the weight down for a cheaper price?

No. Give accurate information or clearly labelled estimates. An understated load is not a reliable basis for equipment selection or cost comparison.

Begin with what you know, identify what is provisional and confirm the finished load before transport. That produces a useful estimate instead of a misleading low number.
