Ask the seller more than whether a courier is allowed
Find out whether the item is packed for transport or offered exactly as it stands. Does the seller have a pallet, crate or suitable carton? Can they provide the finished dimensions and gross weight? Where will the item be handed over, and what loading equipment is available?
These answers can change the cost and practicality of the purchase. A cheap machine in an inaccessible basement is a different transport job from the same machine secured on a pallet beside a forklift.
Keep purchase approval separate from carrier collection
Inspect the item or arrange appropriate verification before authorising the purchase. The transport booking should not ask the driver to decide whether the product matches an advertisement, negotiate its price or act as your payment agent.
Have the seller confirm the agreed goods, any included accessories and the collection reference. If the item is a return or an exchange, settle that authorisation before the transport is booked. The carrier needs permission to collect a specific prepared consignment.
Build the quote around both ends
| Before purchasing, confirm | Why it matters |
|---|
| Finished package or pallet specification | Determines the load being transported |
| Seller’s release point and help | Determines the collection scope |
| Buyer’s access and unloading | Determines what happens at arrival |
| Earliest readiness and latest collection | Establishes the usable booking window |
| Required arrival | Helps compare scheduled and urgent transport |
Do not budget using only the distance between the two towns. Packing, access and extra handling can matter as much as the highway portion.
Put the responsibilities in writing
A practical message to the seller is: “Before I arrange transport, please confirm the item will be securely packed as [description], measuring [dimensions] and weighing [weight]. Please identify the collection point, loading assistance and times when an authorised person can release it.”
Give WTM that information alongside the destination. If packaging is not yet arranged, disclose the gap instead of describing the shipment as ready. A quotation for a prepared pallet does not automatically include preparing that pallet.
Do not mistake collection for delivery completion
The seller’s obligation to release the item and the carrier’s obligation to transport it belong to different parts of the transaction. Keep the purchase record and the shipment record linked by a reference. Use the POD to establish the transport handoff, not as proof of the product’s mechanical condition.
For a suitable accepted booking, WTM offers courier, LTL and dedicated transport. The correct service follows the packed item and deadline. Start with the freight quote form, not a guessed vehicle category.
Can a private seller hand over the goods?
Yes, when they authorise release and the agreed collection arrangement is suitable. Provide a reachable contact.
Can I get a shipping estimate before the item is packed?
Explain which measurements and weights are provisional. Confirm the final specification and price basis before booking the collection.
Agree what will be ready for the driver before you commit to a pickup-only purchase. That turns a listing into a workable shipment.
