Freight class is a standardized classification system used to determine shipping rates for less-than-truckload (LTL) freight. It is based on four factors: density, stowability, handling difficulty, and liability. Two shipments of the same weight can have very different freight classes — and very different costs — depending on these factors.
WTM Logistics provides LTL freight service across the Peace Region through its LTL service and LTL service for the Peace Region, with pricing based on the actual characteristics of your freight.
Density — the weight per cubic foot of your freight. Higher density means a lower class because dense freight uses space efficiently.
Stowability — how easily your freight fits with other shipments. Freight that is easy to stack gets a lower class.
Handling difficulty — how much special care your freight requires. Standard pallets are easy. Fragile items get a higher class.
Liability — the value and risk associated with your freight. High-value items get a higher class because the carrier assumes more risk.
Freight class is the multiplier that determines your LTL rate. Class 50 freight (dense, durable items like steel) costs less to ship than Class 500 freight (low-density, fragile items) of the same weight.
NMFC stands for the National Motor Freight Classification system. It assigns a class number between 50 and 500 to different types of freight. The lower the number, the less expensive the freight is to ship.
The most accurate method is to provide accurate weight, dimensions, and a description of your freight to your carrier. WTM dispatch can help you determine the correct freight class for your shipment.
