The dimensions needed for a freight request are the maximum outside dimensions of the packed handling unit—not necessarily the dimensions of the pallet underneath it. Include the complete height from the bottom of the handling unit to its highest packed point.

A pallet label is useful identification, but it can conceal overhang, protective packaging or an irregular load. Estes’ freight measurement guidance includes the pallet in shipment measurements.

Compare the base with the occupied envelope

Imagine goods on a nominal 48 × 40-inch pallet. The packed goods project two inches beyond each long end and one inch beyond each side. The outside footprint becomes 52 × 42 inches, not 48 × 40 inches.

At a packed height of 60 inches, the first footprint would suggest 66.67 cubic feet. The actual hypothetical envelope occupies 52 × 42 × 60 ÷ 1,728 = approximately 75.83 cubic feet. The difference is about 9.17 cubic feet, or 13.75% of the smaller figure.

These numbers illustrate measurement only. They do not approve overhanging packaging or predict a corresponding percentage price increase.

Measure in the transport-ready condition

Apply the final wrapping, corner protection and protective enclosure before taking final dimensions. Include projections that will remain during transport. A cover added afterwards can change the usable envelope even though the product itself has not changed.

Use a safe measuring method suited to the load. Do not climb onto unstable freight or move heavy goods simply to reach a measurement point. The team responsible for preparing the load should provide accurate external dimensions.

Build a short measurement record

Pallet Size vs Packed Freight Dimensions: Measure Overhang Correctly — reference table
RecordWhat it prevents
Unit referenceConfusing similarly packed pallets
Length, width and height with unitsLosing the measurement basis
Packed gross weightUsing product-only weight
Stackability and orientationAssuming space can be reused
Photo and measurement dateUsing an older packing arrangement

For several different units, use one line per unit or identical group. Do not replace the dimension list with only an average size.

Recheck after a packaging change

A repaired crate, an added carton or additional bracing can affect the quote inputs. Send the revised dimensions before collection and identify the shipment being changed. A photograph alone may not tell the quoting team which number is different.

Use the cubic-volume worksheet to calculate the revised occupied cube. Keep any earlier quote tied to its original inputs until the change has been reviewed.

Give dispatch the shipment, not the pallet catalogue

WTM’s LTL service is planned from the goods that will actually travel. Send maximum packed dimensions, gross weights and access requirements with your request. The existing LTL preparation guide covers the broader preparation process; this measurement record keeps the capacity inputs precise.
