Freight density is packed gross weight divided by the volume occupied by the packed shipment. Use the outside dimensions and include the packaging and pallet in the weight. The result describes density; it does not automatically establish a freight rate or a universal classification.
Old Dominion’s density guidance uses shipment weight and cubic volume. The calculator below applies that arithmetic and keeps the units visible.

Choose inches and pounds for lb/ft³, or centimetres and kilograms for kg/m³. Enter the outside dimensions of one packed unit and its gross weight. Identical units have the same density; multiply their cube and weight by the quantity to obtain the group totals.
For differently sized units, calculate each unit’s volume separately, add all volumes and divide total gross weight by total volume. Do not average the individual density numbers unless their volumes happen to be equal.
A hypothetical packed pallet measures 48 × 40 × 60 inches and weighs 600 pounds gross. Its cube is 48 × 40 × 60 ÷ 1,728 = 66.67 cubic feet. Its density is 600 ÷ 66.67 = approximately 9.00 lb/ft³.
The divisor 1,728 converts cubic inches to cubic feet because one cubic foot is 12 × 12 × 12 cubic inches. Keeping the units beside the calculation makes a mistaken inch-to-foot conversion easier to spot.
A hypothetical handling unit measures 120 × 100 × 150 centimetres and weighs 270 kilograms gross. Its volume is 120 × 100 × 150 ÷ 1,000,000 = 1.80 cubic metres. Its density is 270 ÷ 1.80 = 150 kg/m³.
These two examples are separate shipments, not exact metric conversions of each other. Both use packed external dimensions rather than the product’s catalogue measurements.
Measuring below the top of the freight, leaving out an overhang or using product-only weight changes the answer. A declared pallet size is not sufficient when the goods project beyond it. Estes’ measurement instructions likewise include the handling unit when measuring the shipment.
Record how the weight was obtained. A measured packed weight is different from an estimate based on an old product specification. Tell the quoting team when the goods are not packed yet and the dimensions remain provisional.
Density is a useful input to LTL freight planning. Where a classification system applies, other shipment characteristics and the applicable commodity provisions can matter too. This calculator is not a substitute for confirmation of the accepted classification or pricing basis.
