A cost per pallet and a rate per mile are different ways of expressing price. To compare them, calculate the complete charge for the same shipment and included service. A small number attached to one unit is not necessarily a cheaper movement.

Some prices are shipment-specific rather than built from either unit. Always use the provider’s quoted basis, distance definition, minimums and included charges instead of inventing a conversion rule.

Convert each offer to a trip total

Cost per Pallet vs Rate per Mile: Compare Freight Pricing Units — reference table
Hypothetical pricing expressionDefined inputsTransportation subtotal
$90 per palletSix eligible pallets$540
$3.00 per mile150 quoted chargeable miles$450
$475 shipment quoteSame defined movement$475

These examples are invented Canadian-dollar figures before tax. They are not published WTM rates. Fuel, accessorials, minimum charges and differences in the accepted service must be checked before the totals are comparable.

The pricing unit needs a definition

For a pallet-based quote, ask which packed dimensions, height, weight and stackability were assumed. Six standard-footprint units and six long crates should not be treated as equivalent simply because both are called pallets.

For a mileage-based quote, ask which distance the quote uses. The quoted chargeable movement may not be identical to the shortest consumer-map distance between two city centres. Use the agreed distance rather than substituting your own without discussion.

Do not mix miles and kilometres

A rate per mile cannot be compared directly with the same number per kilometre. One mile equals 1.609344 kilometres. A hypothetical rate of $3 per mile corresponds arithmetically to approximately $1.864 per kilometre before other differences in the quotation.

Record the unit beside both distance and rate. The complete formula is price per distance unit multiplied by the number of those same units. Converting one without the other changes the result incorrectly.

Separate average cost from the purchased rate

After paying $540 for six pallets, you can report an average of $90 per pallet. That does not prove the next single pallet will cost $90. Minimum charges, shipment scope and available service can make the next quotation different.

The same distinction applies to a full vehicle: dividing the charge by loaded miles produces an internal average, not necessarily a carrier’s offered tariff for future work.

Ask for equivalent service

Add the pickup, delivery, loading arrangements and arrival commitment to the comparison. An exclusive vehicle and a shared-capacity option may have different purposes even when their calculated totals happen to match.

Use the freight quote comparison template to bring each offer onto the same boundary. WTM can quote the complete movement through its freight transport service, leaving you with a clear shipment price rather than a misleading comparison between unrelated units.
