WTM Logistics · Shipping questions answered

You can ask WTM to collect a shipment before the receiver is ready, but the time between pickup and delivery must have an agreed custody plan. Transport, temporary holding and final delivery are separate requirements. Explain both deadlines before booking instead of assuming a driver or vehicle will store the goods until convenient.

Illustration of collection, agreed interim holding and later delivery as separate courier planning stages.

Start with the reason the dates differ

A supplier may need an order removed before the buyer’s receiving appointment. A private seller may be available only on one day. A project may not have space for the goods until a later stage. These situations can be planned, but only when the gap between release and receiving is known.

Provide the earliest and latest possible pickup, the requested delivery date and whether either can change. A one-day difference and an open-ended delay have different storage and transport consequences.

State what needs to happen between the two handoffs

Ask whether the appropriate arrangement is scheduled transport, agreed staging, or another holding service. The quote should identify any storage period, handling and redelivery. Do not assume an item will remain in the same vehicle or that a parked vehicle provides a suitable storage environment.

RequirementDetail to confirm
CollectionWhen the sender can release the prepared goods
Interim custodyWhere and under what agreed conditions the goods can be held
DeliveryWho can receive, at which address and during what window
ChangesWho authorises extra holding or a new delivery date

Temperature-sensitive goods need an appropriate continuous arrangement. Ordinary temporary holding should not be assumed to include refrigeration or temperature records.

Compare changing pickup with adding a holding step

Sometimes the simplest option is for the supplier to retain the goods until a later collection. At other times the order must leave. Compare the practical choices using the supplier’s rules and WTM’s available service rather than adding an unplanned storage stop automatically.

For example, a buyer with one crated machine might need Thursday collection and Monday receiving. Ask whether the sender can release on Monday instead, or whether a quoted interim custody arrangement is needed. The lowest line-haul price alone will not answer that question.

Make the receiving date useful rather than aspirational

A building opening date can move. A workshop may need an appointment rather than a date printed on a purchase order. Confirm the receiving contact and access before the goods leave the sender, and tell dispatch promptly about changes.

If the receiver becomes unavailable, seek an acknowledged revised plan. A message asking to “leave it somewhere safe” is not enough for a pallet, high-value shipment or goods requiring special conditions.

Can I collect today and decide the destination later?

That requires an expressly agreed custody arrangement. A standard point-to-point quote should have a defined destination; do not send goods into transit with no authorised next step.

Is holding included in a next-day shipping price?

Do not assume so. Ask what the selected service includes and identify any intentional delivery delay before approving the quote.

Tell WTM both dates and what the goods require while they wait. We can quote the complete sequence rather than only the pickup.
