Explain what is physically separate
A purchase order may include one machine on a pallet and a carton of accessories. From the buyer’s perspective, it is one order. For collection and loading, it may be two handling units with different shapes and weights.
State each unit’s measurements, gross weight and packaging. If the box is secured within the palletised load, include it in the pallet’s overall dimensions and total weight. If it remains loose, describe it separately. The handling-unit guide explains the counting distinction in more detail.
Decide whether arrival together is essential
Some goods can be delivered separately without a problem. Others cannot be used until all pieces are present. Tell dispatch whether the accessories must stay with the main unit and whether a split movement would be acceptable.
A single invoice or purchase order does not automatically establish one physical delivery. Make that requirement part of the quotation and receiving instructions.
Do not improvise a pallet assembly to avoid a second line item
Adding a carton to the top of a machine can change the loaded height, stability or stacking restriction. Use a packing arrangement suitable for the contents and handling. Have the supplier secure and identify the complete load before collection.
For illustration, a business might ship a crated unit and a separate document-and-accessory carton. The carton may need ordinary parcel handling while the crate requires a tailgate. Both still belong in the same quote request so the vehicle and handoff can be planned together.
Price the complete set
| Quote input | Pallet or crate | Separate box |
|---|
| Outer measurements | Include base and projections | Measure the sealed carton |
| Gross weight | Include packaging and base | Include all packed contents |
| Handling | State dock, forklift or tailgate requirement | State fragile, upright or other needs |
| Identification | Main shipment reference | Matching reference and piece number |
| Delivery | Agreed receiving point | Same point or separately specified handoff |
Ask whether the accepted service can carry the whole set and whether the delivery commitment applies to both pieces. This prevents a comparison between a complete quote and a lower amount covering only the pallet.
Confirm what the receiver should expect
Tell the receiver the number and type of units before arrival. A POD for a delivery should be checked against the consignment that was booked, not against an assumption that “the pallet” contains everything.
The WTM Customer Portal helps keep the quote, payment, GPS tracking and issued documents together. Use consistent references so the box does not become an unexplained extra in the records.
Can everything move by LTL?
WTM can assess the complete load for an appropriate service. Suitability depends on packaging, handling and deadline, not just the existence of one pallet.
Is it always cheaper to secure the box to the pallet?
Not necessarily. Compare the safe prepared configurations rather than changing packaging solely to chase a lower description.
Describe the whole order as the driver will receive it. That is the basis for a useful box-and-pallet quote.
Keep your shipping records within reach
The WTM Customer Portal brings requests, quotes, online payments, real-time GPS tracking and issued shipping documents together. Use previous shipment records as a reference, and update the details whenever your next collection differs.
For regular work, WTM offers 10% off recurring shipments. A funded credit account separately offers up to 25% off eligible services. The offers are separate, not an automatic combined discount.
