Start with the object’s vulnerable parts
A framed item, a ceramic piece and an electronic instrument can fail in different ways. Identify projecting parts, glass, moving components and surfaces that cannot bear pressure. Ask the manufacturer, seller or a suitable packer for packaging advice where the item’s construction requires it.
Do not rely on a “fragile” label to prevent movement inside an oversized box. The packaging needs to control and protect the object during its planned handling and transport.
Choose packaging before measuring for the quote
Protective materials change the outer dimensions and weight. A quote based on the bare object may no longer describe the shipment once a crate or larger outer carton is added. Provide the final packed measurements and explain whether the package must remain upright or cannot be stacked.
UPS’s packaging guidance distinguishes between single- and two-box methods and recommends protective cushioning for fragile goods. That illustrates the importance of packaging design; it is not a universal recipe for every object. See UPS packaging guidance.
Keep packing and transportation as separate jobs
| Job to arrange | Question to resolve |
|---|
| Preparing the object | Who secures removable or moving parts? |
| Protective package | Who supplies the appropriate box, crate or cushioning? |
| Collection handling | Where is the packed item and how will it reach the vehicle? |
| Transport service | Does the load require courier, freight or dedicated capacity? |
| Final handoff | Who can accept it and where will it be placed? |
WTM can review a white-glove transport requirement where additional handling is needed. Do not assume packing, unpacking or placement is included unless it is part of the accepted quote.
Explain unusual handling in concrete terms
“Handle carefully” does not tell dispatch whether a crate needs a particular orientation, a mechanical lift or protection from other freight being placed on top. Describe the actual constraint and provide relevant measurements or photographs.
An urgent dedicated trip does not automatically solve inadequate packaging. Likewise, a large crate is not proof that an item has been properly secured inside it. The packing and vehicle decisions should work together.
Keep useful condition records
The sender and receiver can record the item’s condition and packaging before and after transport. Keep those records with the purchase and shipment references. The carrier’s POD documents the delivery handoff; it does not certify the item’s internal condition or suitability for use.
Ask about the service’s applicable terms for the shipment’s declared value and handling needs before booking. Do not assume a special label or an informal conversation replaces the agreed service terms.
Should I choose the fastest courier for a fragile item?
Choose a service that meets the deadline and handling requirement. Faster transport does not remove the need for a properly prepared package.
Can I ask WTM for a quote while finding a packer?
Yes. Be clear that the packaging is not final, and update the dimensions, weight and readiness before the shipment is accepted for collection.
Prepare the protection first, then book the movement. WTM can quote the actual packed item rather than guess what will reach the driver.
