WTM Logistics · Shipping questions answered

A box weighing more than 30 kilograms does not automatically require a full truck, but it may exceed the limit of the parcel product you first considered. Compare the chosen carrier’s actual service specifications, packed size and handling arrangements. WTM Logistics can assess a heavy box as a courier, straight-truck or freight request without relying on one universal weight cutoff.

There is no single weight limit for every shipping company

Canada Post publishes a 30-kilogram maximum for its domestic parcel products. FedEx Ground Canada publishes a limit of 150 pounds, or 68 kilograms, per package, together with dimensional restrictions. These are examples of different product rules—not a claim that either product fits every heavy box. See the Canada Post domestic specifications and FedEx Ground service details.

For a 40-kilogram carton, the right next step is therefore not to declare it unshippable or immediately order a full truck. Check its contents, packed dimensions, route and how it can be handled safely.

Describe the weight of the finished package

Use the gross packed weight, including protective materials and any base. A product weighing 28 kilograms before packaging may produce a different final shipping weight. A dense metal item also behaves differently inside a carton from a bulky lightweight object.

Measure the widest outer dimensions and identify whether the package has a stable base, lifting points or a pallet. A “heavy box” description should not conceal a loose machine that still needs crating.

Avoid making manual lifting the unspoken plan

Tell WTM where the item sits and what handling equipment is available. Do not assume one driver will carry it down stairs or that the receiver can lift it because the contents are described as a parcel.

A heavy consignment may need a mechanical handling plan, a suitable pallet or agreed extra assistance. Those decisions depend on the item and the site. Do not risk moving it yourself to meet an unconfirmed collection arrangement.

Compare the sensible transport choices

Load situationUseful question
A well-packed single box within a carrier’s accepted specificationIs the selected parcel or courier service suitable for its weight and dimensions?
A dense, awkward item needing mechanical movementShould it travel secured on a pallet or in a crate?
Several heavy boxes to one receiverIs one consolidated freight movement more practical?
A critical replacement needed against a strict deadlineIs dedicated transport required even though the load is small?

WTM can assess 5-ton truck service and LTL where those are a better match. This guide does not assign a fixed WTM maximum to every vehicle or handling method.

Book the receiving arrangement as carefully as pickup

Explain the delivery entrance and who can accept the load. A residence, workshop and staffed dock have different requirements. Specify any ground-level handoff or inside handling before accepting the quote.

Should I split a heavy item into lighter packages?

Only when the product can safely be separated and packed appropriately. Do not dismantle an item merely to force it into a service category without considering its condition and the receiver’s needs.

Does a heavy carton always cost less than a pallet?

Not necessarily. Compare complete suitable quotes using the real dimensions, handling and deadline.

Send WTM the finished weight, measurements and access details. We will assess how to move the item—not simply what to call it.
