When only part of an order is urgent, compare moving the critical items separately with expediting the entire load. The split must still leave the receiver with usable goods and a clear plan for the remainder. A small fast shipment is not useful if it arrives without the component needed to use it.
This is a purchasing worksheet, not a claim that splitting always saves money or meets a deadline. WTM can assess hotshot transportation and the appropriate service for the balance.
Ask the receiving team which items are genuinely needed first and what they depend on. Include accessories, instructions or paired parts required to make the critical item usable.
| Decision field | Critical shipment | Remaining shipment |
|---|---|---|
| Included items | Minimum useful set | Clearly listed balance |
| Packed units | Separate dimensions and gross weights | Revised balance dimensions and weights |
| Ready time | Confirmed release | Confirmed release |
| Required arrival | Actual operational deadline | Acceptable planned receiving time |
| Receiver | Contact expecting urgent items | Contact expecting remaining goods |
| References | Unique shipment linked to order | Separate shipment linked to same order |
The list should be approved by the business responsible for the goods. Do not let the transport booking accidentally become the decision about which technical components are needed.
Obtain a quotation for the complete urgent load and a second plan covering the urgent set plus the balance. Include additional packing and handling created by the split.
For illustration only, a whole-load urgent offer might total $1,200. A separate urgent movement at $450 plus a planned balance movement at $500 totals $950 before any extra preparation costs. The apparent $250 saving matters only if both parts meet their requirements. These are invented Canadian-dollar figures, not WTM rates.
Removing cartons from a pallet changes the original handling-unit description. Update the counts, dimensions, weights and packing lists for both shipments. Do not reuse the original full-order details for each half.
Give the receiver a clear account of what is arriving first. An order split into two movements should not be presented as fully delivered after the first POD becomes available.
Record the balance’s booking and expected receiving plan at the same time as the urgent decision. Otherwise, the organisation may solve today’s emergency while leaving the rest of the order without transport.
Our split-shipment tracking reference shows how to maintain the relationship between one commercial order and several movements.
Send WTM the critical set and the balance as separate packed descriptions. We can review the urgent service and appropriate freight option for each, with the customer decisions and shipment records kept clear through the Customer Portal.
