A freight carrier scorecard should connect every measure to a defined shipment population and retrievable evidence. Track the service your business actually purchased, and keep different service types separate when their commitments are not comparable.

This template is for internal evaluation. It does not rank named carriers or report WTM performance. Replace the example measures with the requirements of your business and the information you can genuinely verify.

Choose a small set of defined measures

Freight Carrier Performance: Build a Scorecard You Can Audit — reference table
MeasureSuggested calculation or checkEvidence to retain
On-time deliveryEligible shipments meeting defined time rule ÷ eligible shipmentsAccepted window and actual event

These are proposed worksheet definitions, not universal industry benchmarks or guaranteed portal reports.

Separate service and data quality

A missing timestamp can prevent a reliable on-time calculation. Report the missing-data rate instead of forcing that shipment into a success category. Similarly, a record that proves vehicle arrival may not prove unloading completion.

Use the agreed event. If your contract measures arrival at the dock, do not silently change the test to completion of unloading because that timestamp is easier to obtain.

Compare like with like

Urgent dedicated freight, scheduled shared-capacity freight and local courier work can have different operating commitments. Show their results separately before considering a combined view.

When reporting a combined percentage, add the underlying successful and eligible counts. Do not average a 10-shipment lane’s percentage with a 1,000-shipment lane’s percentage as though their sample sizes were equal.

Avoid a misleading overall grade

Price, service and paperwork can inform a purchasing decision without being squeezed into an arbitrary single number. If you use weights, record why those weights reflect your business priorities and keep mandatory requirements as pass/fail gates.

An excellent paperwork score does not make an unsuitable vehicle acceptable. A low price should not cancel out a requirement the service cannot meet.

Turn the review into action

Select a small number of recurring issues and link each to specific shipments. Ask whether the cause is the transport plan, supplier readiness, receiving access or an incomplete request. Assign an improvement and review its result on a later comparable set.

Our OTIF worksheet defines a combined timing-and-quantity measure, while the invoice variance log provides a billing evidence structure.

Bring WTM the service commitments your operation needs. Our freight transportation team can review the job before booking, and your shipment records can then support a specific, evidence-based service conversation.
