A PRO number is a carrier shipment reference commonly used to track freight. A bill-of-lading number identifies a transport document, while a purchase-order number identifies a buyer’s commercial order. They may be connected, but they should not be assumed to be the same number.

For a public example, Old Dominion’s tracking interface requests PRO numbers. Other providers may call their tracking reference something else. Use the identifier supplied by the carrier handling the shipment.

Match the identifier to the question

What Is a PRO Number? BOL, Purchase Order and Tracking References Explained — reference table
ReferenceWhat it typically identifiesUseful for
PRO or carrier tracking referenceCarrier’s shipment recordTracking enquiry
BOL numberBill-of-lading documentTransport-document reconciliation
Purchase orderBuyer’s commercial orderMatching a delivery to a purchase
Invoice numberA billing documentPayment and charge enquiries
Handling-unit identityA particular pallet or packageUnit-specific differences

This is a practical dictionary, not a guarantee that every system assigns all five references separately.

One order can have several tracking references

Suppose an illustrative purchase order is delivered through an urgent first shipment and a later pallet shipment. The purchase order remains one commercial record, but each physical shipment needs to be followed using its own carrier reference.

Likewise, multiple purchase orders might be combined in one transport movement. Record their relationship instead of forcing one order number into every field and losing the others.

Avoid copying the wrong number

When asking for an update, say which type of reference you are providing. “Our PO 4500” is clearer than “tracking 4500” when 4500 belongs only to your purchasing system.

Do not invent a carrier reference for a quotation that has not become a confirmed shipment. A quote reference helps find the commercial discussion; it may not be a trackable transport record.

Build a simple cross-reference line

Keep your order number, carrier shipment reference, BOL reference and relevant invoice together. Add the collection date and destination as supporting details, not as substitutes for the identifier.

For an exception involving one unit, provide that unit’s identity and the shipment reference. The split-shipment tracking guide shows a more detailed mapping when several movements belong to one order.

Use WTM’s actual customer records

The WTM Customer Portal lets you review shipment history and available documents. Use the references shown in your records when contacting dispatch. This article does not claim that WTM assigns a PRO number identical to another carrier’s numbering system.

Send the correct shipment reference with your question, plus the specific event you need clarified. For a new movement, use our freight quote form and keep the resulting quotation and confirmed shipment distinguishable as the job progresses.
